How much does it cost to notarize a travel consent letter?

The base cost

Notarizing a child travel consent letter online is $49.99 CAD with one signing parent or guardian. That covers identity verification, witnessing the signature, the notary's signature and seal, and same-day email delivery so you can print a copy before you travel.

If both parents need to sign — the usual situation when a child travels with a grandparent, a school group, or alone — the second signature is charged at the $26 CAD additional rate when handled in the same appointment. Two parents signing together is therefore $75.99, not two full fees.

Both parents, different cities

Parents do not need to be in the same place, or even the same time zone, to sign in one appointment. Each joins the video call from wherever they are, shows ID, and signs on camera. This is a genuine practical advantage over in-person notarization, where separated or geographically distant parents often end up booking two appointments and paying twice.

One parent travelling with the child

The non-accompanying parent signs the consent letter: $49.99.

Child travelling with grandparents

Both parents sign in the same appointment: $49.99 plus $26, or $75.99.

Two children, one trip

Where a single letter covers both children, the additional page is $26 — $75.99 with one signing parent. If the destination requires a separate letter per child, the second letter is charged at the additional rate in the same appointment rather than as a new booking.

Sole custody: a cheaper path

If you have sole custody, you may not need a consent letter from the other parent at all. Border officials generally want to see the custody order itself. In that case what you need is a certified true copy of the order — also $49.99 for the first copy, with additional pages at $26. Since custody orders often run several pages, ask us for an exact quote rather than assuming the base fee covers it.

Why the timing matters more than the price

The fee is the same whether you book three weeks out or the night before, so there is no financial reason to leave this late. There is a practical one though. If a detail is wrong — a misspelled name, wrong return date, a missing passport number — catching it a few days early means a quick correction. Catching it the morning of your flight means travelling without a usable letter. Notarize once the travel dates are confirmed.
