How much does it cost to notarize a power of attorney?

The base cost

Notarizing a single power of attorney online is $49.99 CAD, covering identity verification, witnessing your signature, the notary's signature and seal, and same-day email delivery. Additional pages or exhibits in the same appointment are $26 CAD each.

Powers of attorney tend to run longer than affidavits — many provincial forms are several pages — so check the page count when estimating. A four-page POA is $49.99 plus $78 for the three additional pages, or $127.99.

Where the real cost sits

For a POA, the notarial fee is rarely the expensive part. The costly outcome is a document that gets rejected, because a rejected POA usually means redrafting, re-signing, re-notarizing, and sometimes missing whatever deadline prompted it. Three factors drive that risk:

• Witness requirements. Several provinces require one or two witnesses in addition to the notary, and disqualify your spouse, your appointed attorney, and that person's spouse. A POA missing a required witness is invalid.
• Institution policy. Banks, land registries, and investment firms set their own rules, and some still require a wet-ink original that no remote appointment can produce.
• Document type. Land-registry and certain estate-related POAs may need an in-person process or a lawyer's involvement.

A short limited POA

A one-page limited power of attorney for a single transaction is $49.99.

A standard provincial POA form

A three-page continuing power of attorney for property: $49.99 base plus $52 for two additional pages, or $101.99.

Property and personal care together

Many people sign both a property POA and a personal care POA at once. Handled in a single appointment, the second document is charged at the additional rate rather than a second full fee — a meaningful saving over booking twice.

Do witnesses cost extra?

We do not charge a separate fee for witnesses attending the video call. If your province requires one or two witnesses, they join the same appointment and sign in view of the notary at no additional charge. What you should not do is arrange witnesses who are disqualified under your province's rules, since that invalidates the document regardless of what it cost to notarize.

Comparing against a lawyer's office

A lawyer drafting a power of attorney from scratch, with advice on how to structure the authority, generally costs considerably more than a notarial fee — and for a consequential POA that advice is often worth paying for. The two are not really substitutes: a notary witnesses execution, a lawyer advises on content. If you already have a properly drafted POA and only need it executed, remote notarization is the efficient option.
